Don't confuse our tastes with what corporate shoves down our throat. The US car mfg's do a lot of research....unfortunately they don't know the questions to ask, resulting in feedback that suits upper mgmt. In example...some good research would be ...park a car at the coffee shop and see if people stop by to gander, as I did with my red '97 9K. Within an hour several people stopped by and looked it over...two asked people in the shop who owned the that red car. I showed one individual the hatch, fold down seats and described the performance, econ, safety, etc.
The guy just shook his head.."Why don't they make cars like this anymore"?
The best consumer research that I have ever heard of was when Lee Iacocca instructed his engineering department to cut the top off of a K car so he could drive it around to see if people noticed. They did and Lee had that car in production...fast.
GM thinks SAAB customers define a SAAB as a car with front wheel drive, turbo and the key between the seats. Jay, it appears, is getting it. But will he get the product development support?
