Having grown up in Ireland, I know there is certainly enough to do to fill 5 days. What you choose to do is more down to your own preferences - Dublin has museums, cathedrals, galleries, Phoenix Park, shopping on Grafton Street, trendy bars in Temple Bar area. Food in Ireland has improved INFINITELY in the last 10 years. It is now difficult to find a bad meal; 15 years ago it was almost impossible to find a good meal, without paying an arm and a leg. I heartily recommend to at least once try a Full Irish Breakfast. Guinness is better in Dublin than anywhere else in Ireland, or anywhere else in the world (it doesn't travel well). If you want to just get around Dublin, I'd recommend staying in a hotel or Bed & Breakfast near the city centre, and using buses or taxis - they're pretty reasonable, at least compared to Boston. Dublin taxi drivers may not be up to the standard of London cabbies, but they are at elast familiar with the city they drive cabs in... South of the River Liffey ("Deh Soutsaide") is more tourist friendly than "Deh Effin' Nowrtsaide" (that would be North of the Liffey to you and me). If you cross O'Connel bridge, stick to O'Connell Street, and I would say wherever you go, don't walk after dark (which will be about 10 PM in June). More than one unsuspecting tourist has been robbed in unfamiliar territory. I don't mean to scare you, crime is relaitvely low, but in a strange city it's easy to become a vicitm.
If you want to go outside Dublin, there is a good bus and train service, or if you're feeling adventurous, you may want to drive. I strongly recommend requesting an automatic, no matter how good you are with a stick. A lot of the roads are narrow, and driving etiquette is different from what you are used to - no one place is better or worse, just expectations are different.
I have never been to Newgrange Co Meath, but it is definitely worth a visit. Glendalough in Co Wilcklow is also beautiful, and is the home of St. Kevin. Rather than trying to cover too much ground, I would recommend sticking to one area - sometimes I hear somebody who was in Ireland for 5 days, and they say "we were in Dublin, Cork, Galway, we did the Ring of Kerry, saw the Cliffs of Moher, the Aran Islands..." That's a bit like saying, "I was in America for a week, and I saw New York, Hiked the Appalachian Trail, was in Alaska, Hollywood and The Grand Canyon"...

Check out the tourist board's website - ireland.ie
lots of useful information there.

Good luck and have fun!
