It is a thankless job..... My wife got talked into running for election as the President of her local school union representing support staff, i.e. teacher's aides, custodians, secretaries, and food service workers, two years ago. Our HOME telephone has been ringing off the hook since!
All her "friends" who pledged their support if she got elected immediately disappeared, only to return later with knives to stab her in the back at work and spread false tales about her throughout our small community.
You will be required to support the slackers. Any union official who does not perform their duties to vociferiously defend all membership, can be sued in court by the affected member(s). In the case of our state's Teacher's Union, the state union will assist the defendent in their claim against the local officer - regardless of how unfounded (they don't want to be sued also)! And the Professional Liability insurance provided to all elected officers by the state union does not cover claims by a member against their local officers.
Her ungratefull constituents have consumed most of OUR personal time for the past 2 years with their nauseatingly petty little complaints. My God - one long running issue was caused by two women who worked together but didn't like the smell of each other's perfume!!! Almost all issues during her two year sentence have been caused by employees too stupid to realize their own laziness/pettiness is the cause for their own employment difficulties!
She has been to the Doctor for stress related disorders brought about by this position, and she is now suffering from a stress caused skin rash because the local school district wants to lay-off 8 of her members as a cost savings.
Her goal with the slackers has been only to force the school district to correctly follow all steps in the discipline/discharge process. If the employee can't see what is at the end of this long long tunnel, it is their own darn fault. But everything has to be carefully documented to protect her/our butts if the discharged employee decides to sue.
Her compensation for two years of living hell - $0! And her back-stabbing work associates have the nerve to try to pressure her into a second term!
Sorry for the rant.
