I'd like to see some magic, too. He does have a DVD, but you never quite know how much was edited. However, consider that Houdini's career ended up being an escape artist. He put himself in harm's way and appeared to barely escape in time. To this day, he is known as a magician. So I don't think that Blaine is going all wrong.
As far as the breath hold record, what is amazing is that he did this after a week of submersion. Breath hold divers are routinely holding their breath for a long time, as Peter_MA stated. I have not heard of 8 and 9 minute breath holds, however. NOVA had a special on breath hold divers awhile back, and these guys were talking about submersion times of 5 and 6 minutes, and the risk of blacking out on ascent if you exceeded this. That is, with the increase in oxygen partial pressure that occurs in breath hold diving with descent, you can stay down longer, but the O2 partial pressure plummets as you ascend, to the point that now the hemoglobin begins dumping oxygen back into the blood.
I would ask whether these divers in Key West are descending with scuba tanks and then taking them off to enter the wreck, staying at depth until they return to their scuba tank. They say it's easier and safer to maneuver inside a wreck without a scuba tank. With this technique, you could stay down quite awhile, but it's an entirely different physiological situation than taking a breath at one atmosphere pressure (0.21 atm oxygen partial pressure) and holding it for 8 or 9 minutes.
