Last November, my laptop stopped booting up and the restore CDs didn't work, kept getting the Abort, Retry, Fail message. I took the hard drive out, put it in a box to use it as a slave drive and couldn't access the hard drive either. Luckily I didn't lose too much data, had backed up most of it.
So now I'm contemplating whether to try to replace the hard drive (for about $200 installed) or buy a new laptop, around $800-$1000 budget. My old laptop was from February of 2002 - 1.0 GHz Pentium 3, 512 MB RAM, 30GB Hard Drive.
My worry is that if it is more than just the hard drive that is screwed up, I'd be throwing away $200 and just have an unneeded extra hard drive. But I don't want to spend money unnecessarily if I can keep using my old laptop. What are the chances that it's something worse?
If I do buy a new laptop, do you all think that the 64 bit processor will make a big difference in speed with Windows Vista?
Thanks in advance for any wisdom,
Atul
