but my experience is a little different. The difference between a real light foot and a free foot is way more dramatic than what you report. Maybe, you didn't baby the accelerator enough? On everyday gas saving mode, I shift low 2k rpms 80% and near 3k rpms 20%. This way I can get it up to 28 mpg (40/60 city/highway). Especially on highway 50-60 mph can result about 3 mpg saving compare to around 70 mph. I know this may drive lots of people nuts but in NYC highway 50-60 is plenty enough. On long trips I get around 30 mpg when I average 70 mph, 34 mpg with 60 mph. I'm sure 36+ mpg with 50 mph, but you don't want to be doing 50 mph on long trip. So, I settle at 65-70 when I want to save.
Now, on free foot mode, in the city I get 22 to 23 mpg. (40/60 city/highway) On highway, I get 26-28 with 80+ mph.
I keep in mind the distance with one tank and try to keep it 350 to 400. On free foot, I can get 300 or below. That's 100 mile difference and it could be an extra week of commute.
In any case, I love Viggen for its versatility of being econobox, performance sedan, pickup truck all at the same time depending on my need. Enjoy your viggen!
