from Edinburgh to London, with three days of spectacular open road country driving....and all I can say is that we are missing out on some really nice, efficient cars over here. The way GM is going with their gas guzzling SUVs, you would think that someone like Peugeot, Alfa, or hell, even Saab could start offering some good performance, high efficiency cars here in the US (the 1.9 TiD in case of Saab here...)

If you are a car fan, I highly recommend a European vacation with an Avis or Hertz rental car. Once out of London, UK roads are not that congested, and many are a driver's fantasy, with tight curves, mini summits, and spectacular scenery all around.

I'm a bit of a Peugeot fan, having restored a 405 Mi16 to like new condition, and I always try and get a Peugeot when I rent in Europe and locked one in via Avis, which offers a "pick the exact car you want" feature in the reservation. The weather was great and I was lucky enough to drive the car with the hardtop folded for the majority of the time....it was only the 138hp 2 liter, but it was more than adequate, got over 35 mpg on my trip, nice transmission, excellent build quality, and an excellent ride/handling combo. The trunk was huge without the top in it, and still held 2 rollaway suitcases and Not quite as sporty as my Mi16, but many UK magazines have mentioned that the two best Pugs of all times were the 205 GTI 1.9 and the 405 Mi16.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that some day, the US is blessed with better choice!!! (to add to my Saabs, not replace them of course!). I'd love a Pug 407 Coupe or an Alfa 159 or Brera in my driveway!

Cheers,
Paul H.
