After I was hit by identity theft I put a fraud alert with the credit unions.
You get like a 3 month alert automatically when that happens but have to ask specifically for an extension up to 7 years to be put on the books.
When I asked them to do that they tried to talk me out of it saying that it would be more difficult for me to get instant credit (you need to be home answering the phone when they call and double check) and that I wouldn't get as many credit offers sent to me.
Fine, I have no problem with that. I'm not that kind of person that suddenly see something that I HAVE to have that second and need to sign a credit application right then and there.
AND it didn't stop the barrage of credit offers either which I had hoped for.
But it feels good to have that on the records for 7 years and I wouldn't mind having it forever, making it a little bit more difficult for the crooks.
