Of course the detector's legal. It's the fine, and its the points that matter to you. (It's the economy, stupid.) OTOH, the understanding of every cop and of every local traffic court judge is that anyone with a radar detector means to speed, and they intend to do it often. Someone with a detector just has not yet been caught yet. The old yellow, manual tickets had blank squares with no labels for the info might be entered therein, or not. Most JP's have a little chart handy, even glued to the bench, for codes that the cop might write in those extra boxes that indicated things like, perp gave me a hard time, or radar detector, etc. Secret evidence unknown to you, if you will. Lovely. A due process violation not likely to be litigated. I.e., any expression of contrition or statement that you would take care to obey the traffic laws in the future will smell slightly off to their experienced and jaundiced noses as soon as the idea of a radar detector is mentioned. The only thing going for you is that he did not catch you speeding. If the cop could see your plate was missing [BTW, why did you not have a story ready for that? I do. You knew it was a possibility -- car just painted, repair required removal and it is just about to go back on?] (the plate is just another, second you are a scoflaw move to the cop -- BTW I have not had a plate on the front of my Miata for most of the last 12 years; but, that is because a Miata looks so damn good with a clean nose -- but cops know that about Miatas and Vettes), and especially if he could see your detector on the dash or glued to the windscreen or see the LEDs lighting up the night from a block behind you, then he was looking for a reason to jack you up as an as yet un-caught, speeder and generally dangerous driver.
