As another stated, everybody puts out an edsel at some point. the real test is what do they do about it? do they take care of you or blow you off?
as to your two drives, take the working one and make sure any jumpers on it are replicated on the problem one.
Do you have a dos bootable floppy? or an older system (win 98) you can use? what you want to do is 1) forget any manufacturer format software. It's all a workaround for pre NTFS OS's and keeps the calls to tech support lower. it puts stuff on the disk that you *don't* need and can confuse Windoze. 2) boot the DOS disk and point to the 250gb drive. Make sure you are pointing to it! 3) remove any foreign partitions (it will tell you if it finds any) 4) create any partition what it lets you. the important part is that you are blowing away any other partition. you don't even need to format here. 5) remove and put back into the setup you used for the working 250, and try again. use the format under Administrative Tools/ Computer Management / Disk Management (right below disk Defragmenter). Right click on the drive number in the lower window, there may not be a driver letter associated with the drive number yet... do the format thing.
Also, there are external USB to PATA or EIDE drive enclosures for about $20 that are pretty cool. you can drop a drive in that box and use it as an external backup target for your laptop via the USB connection.
email me with any questions - this is what I really do...
