Currently own a 2002 9-3SE 5-door and a 2002 9-5 Aero wagon. Both of these cars are "out of date" (perhaps only the styling of the Aero wagon, but anyway). Both were bought within the last year and a half, used of course.
I didn't want a newer 9-3 as I wanted a hatchback. The 9-3 Sportcombi is nice but rather expensive if bought new. The 9-5 sportwagon is great, but I am REALLY turned off by the newer styling. I think a 2004 9-5 would be the newest Saab I would ever consider buying, maybe a 2005 9-3 Sportcombi. I also think the 6-speed transmissions being dumped in the newer cars is unneeded. Navigation, satellite radio, etc. - overkill. Can't anyone read a map anymore?
As it is, both of my Saabs get comments from coworkers, even though they are "out of date". Hey, they're nice cars. I'd be equally happy driving my '97 900SE coupe again.
