As a general rule car dealers don't reduce the cost of a demo as it's used, that is a demo has the same cost as a brand new one. So depending on the disirability of the merchandise you can usually get a comparable price on a brand new unit. In your case I bet the dealer would also give you the same $1,500 discount on a comparable brand new model.
Another way to look at that is that 8,000 miles and the loss of warranty when the demo was put in service is worth a larger discount than $1,500.
If a current model year car actually becomes a genuine used car, that is it actually was purchased by a consumer new and then for some unusual circumstance is traded in or resold to the dealer, it's usually $3,000-5,000 less than a comparable new unit.
I would say that a demo is often driven by a responsible management type, not the old crazy car salesman of yesteryear as demos for regular sales folks is mostly a thing of the past. Only senior management and owners get demos and by and large they're a responsible bunch.
Some dealers will actually depreciate a demo, reduce the cost as it's used, but generally not enough. Often a dealer will steer a customer to a demo when the dealer holds the high card in the negotiation, that is if the dealer has to pull some strings to accomodate a customer they might push for the customer to take the demo.
Cover yourself by getting a good quote on a comparable non demo, and I think the majority of the time the demo won't make sense. Demos, and leftovers are often sold because folks don't ask how much a new one is.
