these are things to think about.

I have a spare debit card that I only carry on trips abroad in case an ATM eats my card. Also, be aware that some Euro ATMs won't accept US cards because ours don't use Smart Card technology--the cards with an embedded chip. So you may have to hit more than one ATM to get cash. I've never had a problem in France or Germany, but be forewarned. Alternatively, you can just use your credit card for anything you buy, but having a few Euros in your pocket makes life a lot easier, even if it's only for a few hours. Don't forget the exchange rate--not favorable to the dollar. But the ATM or using a credit card gets you the best rates.

BTW, your ATM card must be a debit card with a MasterCard or VISA logo and be on the big banking networks (Cirrus, NYCE, etc). A regular ATM card won't work.

And yep, the train (it is the RER) is known for pickpockets, but picking pockets is a sport among a certain contingent of society all over Europe, not just Paris. Put anything you value in pockets that are hard to pick. In Nov. you'll need a coat in Paris, so put valuables in inside pockets, especially ones with buttons or zippers if possible. If you use a backpack and have to stand in a line, take it off and hold it in your hand or in front of you. The more brazen pickpockets are actually known to razor backpacks open while standing behind you--happened to a friend of my in-laws.

Have fun. Paris is so cool.
