the iPod is popular because it's COOL. and HIP. Let's face it, that is the main selling point for a lot of Apple stuff these days (sorry, Applistas).

I have a Creative Muvo (the one like a pack of gum) and I'm totally happy with it. In exchange for coolness and the easy to use scroll wheel, you give up FM radio and AA battery power with the iPod. And you're mostly locked into using iTunes, which is fine if you're all Apple, but if you want to mix and match your gear, it's limiting. If I download an album on iTunes and then want to put it on my Creative, I have to burn it to CD and then rip it into Windows Media Player and then copy it to the Creative. Awkward.

It's mostly the lack of FM, and not being locked to a rechargable battery, that moved me to the small Creative. Oh, and flash memory too. Yes i know, you can add FM to an Ipod but it's about $50 which is silly.
