May be the difference between Q and H rated tires... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: I won't buy another pair of Hankooks..., JohnB, Thu, 9 Nov 2006 05:22:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My first set of winter tires were Nokian Q's, which I believe were a Q-rated tire. Great on snow, even better on ice, but squirmy on grooved concrete at speed. Unfortunately for me, most of my winter driving is 70+mph on expressways which are cleared "most" of the time. It is the scary driving during morning rush hour when the roads are not free of snow and ice which prompts me to invest in dedicated winter tires.
My second set were/are Semperit Sport Grips, a H-rated tire. Very satisfactory, but not quite as good on snow and ice as the Nokians. Their big advantage though is their stability at highway speeds. This is why I am looking only at H-rated snow tires this time around. I would be interested in T-rated also, but surprisingly they seem to be even more rare than H-rated snow tires.
There is nothing inherently wrong with a Q-rated snow tire, but my driving needs (and Michigan's widely flaunted speed limits!) expose the reality of the Q-rating's 88mph maximum sustained speed recommendation.
