Battery dying gracefully

I've had batteries just up and die, but I've just replaced one in my Viggen that died slowly. The first symptom was unenthusiastic cranking. The engine is in good tune so it started everytime, just had sluggish cranking. This has been going on for a year.
What I thought was unrelated was the radio not turning on with the engine, even if it was previously on.
The last and best clue was the dash computers re-booting after a hard cranking. The miles-per-gallon calculator would reset. Occasionally the climate control computer would reset and display only one large "0", then eventually recover its previous setting.
So, had the battery checked, it failed, and the replacement battery gives none of these mis-behaviors. Yay.
I can't be sure, but perhaps the ignition is firing hotter...anyway the engine fees smoother. The rugs look cleaner too.
