I travel a fair bit in various countries in Europe (well, I live here) and strongly recommend GPS navigation. It's not so much a question of finding your way from Madrid to Seville; that's pretty easy even without a map - and certainly you'll be fine with a standard Michelin map, especially if you have a co-driver.
No, the problem is finding your hotel in the little one-way back alley in the centre of Granada where all streets are one-way (but it's the other way) and you need to turn left here (but unfortunately it's not allowed) etc. etc.
Mediaeval towns in Southern Europe are a damned sight more difficult to navigate through than American grid-patterned cities with numbered streets!
But sure, get a (paper) map as well for back-up...
