boxed speakers need to have a port for the bass to allow the voice coil to move the element enough to make that bass we all love (or hate at 12pm coming from the cars down the street). That's why most all of them have a "bass port" or a "tuned port" or some other such name. If the speaker was *not* in an enclosure the bass would almost cancel itself out during the movement, so the enclosure ports the air moved on the inside of the speaker around and attempts to have it come out in phase, kinda. So, having the arrangement you have usually works very well, little distortion, but not the doubled bass available when ducted back around. But better sound is better, right? The insulation inside the speaker boxes is usually to trap any high frequency so that it doesn't bounce back uncontrolled and cause weird phase noises, again your installation is similar and should be great. I have a friend that had the speakers installed in the walls, a total 6.1 setup. Sounds good but I still prefer my 5.1 with movable speakers! If you haven't seen it, the first XXX movie with Vin Diesel has some excellent 5.1 or 6.1 sounds, especially in the first 10 minutes of the show!
