Happened to me this fall.... I was backing out of a parking spot, was 90% of the way into the drive aisle, looked from side mirror to rear mirror and saw a black car nearly in my trunk with both occupants craning their necs to see something. I pulled back into my spot, got out, and saw the drivers side front fender and driver's side door of the other car heavily damaged. I had two deep scratches in the plastic trim of my bumper. The other car's door would not open!
I called the Police, told the dispatcher it was a non-injury fender bender in a parking lot, she told me no report was necessary. I handed the phone over to the other driver so she could hear the explanation from the Police and not me.
Michigan is a No-Fault state - effectively everyone pays their own damages. Her insurance company sued my company for a $500 tort claim - the maximum allowable under MI's No-Fault system - since her vehicle's position in the drive aisle automatically gave me fault for the accident. My first at-fault claim in over 30 years of driving!
Her damages totaled $1200, mine were $600. The two deep yet short scratches in my plastic bumper skin were not worth $500 (my deductible) to me to get repaired. Black plastic peeking thru the frost gray paint color is pretty inconspicuous.
Enjoy the holidays, these things happen, that is why we are required to carry insurance and why they are called accidents.
