The Ecotec in the GXP is substantially more advanced than what the 9-3SS gets... I suspect ultimately the 9-3 will get a crack at the direct injection engine, but right now it's stuck with standard port injection. I'm not aware that the 9-3SS gets the variable cam timing or twin scroll turbo, but I don't remember reading about either, so they may be unique to the Solstice/Sky too...
Saab contributed a good amount of work to the Ecotec mill, and it's a great engine, but GM Powertrain in general put a lot of resources into making it one of the best four cylinders out there as well. It's great they've succeeded, and even better than they now have something other than a Saab to show off this accomplishment...
