I was leaving for the airport during noon time on December 24 after a couple of weeks on the island of Aruba, working. A brief shower had just stopped. I was coming down at about 35 km/h on a short steep slope which also curves to the right just outside of the refinery. This darned Yaris I rented has such flimsy tires they would have had a lot of trouble in the US stopping. But in Aruba it doesn't much matter. Anyway coming down the slope I found I can't stop the car from sliding. I tried steering it back to my lane but the car has its own idea obeying physics. I cannot avoid hitting the rear driver side quarter panel of an on coming Ford Ranger pickup truck.

I exchanged info with the other party and hurried to the airport. The rental car agent at the airport convinced me to go back to the scene to get a police report. I called the other party and had him call the police while I headed back to the scene. This delay cost me making my flgiht. I delayed coming back to the US one day. But I think I made the right move getting the police report.

Turned out my company has terminated the auto insurance option with the corporate American Express card. In place was our global insurance coverage for any such accident. In any case a police report was required.

But I could not leave the rental office without autorizing an open AE charge for $1,500 based on the agent's preliminary damage estimate of the car. The damage to the other party I don't know yet. Today I learned the damage to the rental car is $1,450.

Anyone has such an experience? How could I get the AE charge reimbursed?
