What most people can't imagine is just how far it is. Plus, Alaska itself is a BIG place. Takes hours to get ANYWHERE. Another thing to keep in mind is that it is not nearly as developed as the "mainland". I was so happy to see a McDonald's after weeks of really bad food, if you can imagine that. Also don't expect to find many decent hotels. Most are quite run down by our standards.

Well, with that out of the way, I can add that the roads two years ago were is excellent shape. Much better than I expected. Very few unpaved sections. I do highly recommend taking the Cassiar highway. It is absolutely beautiful and quite desolate, with plenty of wildlife to keep you entertained for hours. It is also an excellent highway capable of supporting 100+ mph. We did not drive very fast on it, though, because of all the wildlife. Do spend the night at the Bell Lodge II on the Cassiar -- it was by far the best place we stayed at during our trip. If you take Alaska Highway all the way to or from Dawson Creek, make sure you spend time at the Muncho Lake provincial park. It is by far the most majestic place I have ever seen in my life.

Keep in mind that if the weather is hot (it was about 100'F 24 hours per day when we were there) there is high probability of forest fires. Due to remote nature and the scarsity of road grid, you may easily become trapped. Do be very careful and expect road closures.

If you get the chance, do drive Denali Highway. But only in your own car, since it is unpaved and very rough. It is fun to drive, there is almost nobody there and the views are spectacular.

Take a lot of money with you. Everything is extremely expensive.
