A friend had a strange experience jumping his car and I’m curious as to what is happening. It’s not a Saab, unfortunately, by a newish Toyota Echo.

The battery was run down from leaving the lights on. Someone jumped him and the Echo started right up. However, it died several seconds after he removed the jumper cables. The battery had not charged enough for it to restart on its own. He then jumped it again and once again it started right up, but this time he left the cables connected and revved the engine for several minutes. The car died once again a few seconds after he removed the jumper cables, but this time the battery had charged enough to start the car on its own. Everything seems fine now, and he states that this has happened before when he needed to jump the car (again, from leaving the lights on, not through any fault with the car).

In my experience, once the car has started from being jump it should never stall when the jumper cables are removed. The car is running off the alternator at this point and shouldn’t need the cables, or the battery for that matter. Since the car seems to be charging and starting fine, this seems like a strange anomaly to me. Could the ECU be shutting the engine down when it experiences to a voltage change? Inquiring mind want to know.
