As somewhat of an expert in Excel, it is quite simply anything you want it to be.
You can use it to analyze data, store data (think of a quick and dirty database), or even use it as a calendar.
There are third party add-ins that allow you to connect to external databases (think SQL or essbase cubes).
You can write Visual Basic macros to automate manual tasks. My personal macro record is one that distributes reports. A task that once took an employee 4 hours to do is now done is less than 60 seconds with a macro I wrote.
There are powerful functions (vlookup, concatenate, match) that help you manage your data.
It does not work well as a word processor.
