It is a post WWII phenomenon. Diamonds are actually not rare, and perfect diamonds can now be synthesized cheaply and easily. The price of diamonds is kept artificially high by DeBoers (however you spell it) through careful marketting and purposeful limitting of supply. The price will crash as more and more people synthesize diamonds for the black market and as the new Canadian and Russian mines go into high production.
The USA accounts for I believe 50% of the market.
True love extends far beyond silly bangles. If you really want to start out your life together on a good note, take the 10K you would spend for the ring and place it in an IRA that will help keep you 2 love birds safe and happy in your old age.
My views may not seem romantic, but as the protector of my family I see wasting money on something that will wind up in a safe deposit box to keep it safe as bizarre. We have wedding bands. Why dom we need an additional ring? The real gifts we gave each other are beautiful children and a loving home.
If you insist on getting a diamond, bring a strong magnet and a contract stating that these are natural diamonds and are also not blood diamonds. Make sure the diamond is laser etched with a number and then and insure the diamond after checking the diamond's history...Why a magnet? Use a magnet to see if the diamond is magnetic. If it is magnetic, it is a man made diamond. Walk away and report the store. The cut of the diamond is just as important as the mineral itself. Decide on a cut that is brilliant and makes the gem look larger than the ring. Buy a diamond, not the ring it is mounted to. That means it might be better to look at gems first and settings last.
Congrats and best wishes no matter which path you choose.
