I will admit to an SUV bias, but here in CT I see a disproportionate number of SUVs in the ditch as compared to sedans, and that's even with the seemingly high ratio of SUVs to sedans.
There is no reason why an SUV or larger vehicle can't be as stable in snow in the hands of a good driver that adjusts to conditions. I think the reason that there seems to be a greater number of the bigger vehicles in the ditch in snow is that the drivers (1) aren't aware of the different vehicle dynamics of a bigger vehicle, and (2) a misplaced feeling of stability and invulnerability that leads to rash driving.
So no, it isn't the vehicle, it's the driver. 99% of the time it is. However, a lot of SUV drivers like to think of their vehicles a just bigger cars with more capability. So your basis thesis of 'moron' is quite appropriate.
