My parent's car was damaged in a parking lot hit and run. They paid the deductible and the insurance company the rest. The rates did not go up this year.

Costs are so variable. However, I think it was about $1500 to replace the side mirror, fix a door dent (metal not replaced), and repaint the door and blend the color into the fender.

My rule is that I will contact the insurance company if I need their help in collecting from the other driver (not the case with the original poster) or if the total cost of repair is $800 or more (considering that I have a $500 deductible). With a $500 deductible, a $501 seems like asking for trouble as the insurance company would pay $1. I'm willing to be a chicken and pay $100 more ($600) or even $200 more ($700). $750-800 became the breaking point for me.
