Right, they don't last forever so after a while they need to be replaced. There are circumstances that can shorten the life though, for example if the car has a bad turbo seal for a while all the burning oil going through the exhaust after a long time will clog it up. I just got mine replaced on my 9-5 V6 about a year ago. It died because of the DIC failure. Luckily they replaced my cat. under the recall. Not sure if this applies to 9000's but mine now has a noticeable rotten-egg sulfur smell which is associated with the converter's break-in period of about 10,000 miles, which seems high to me. I also wonder why when you buy new cars they don't do this. I have noticed it quite a few times, especially after coming up the hill to my house under heavy load. I pull into the driveway and it smells like a sulfur bomb went off. If you test drive it or buy it and smell this it's probably just the new cat.
