As a NY apartment dweller I'm fairly well versed in getting rid of mice. Poison is likely the most effective solution you will find. The risk here is children or pets getting into it. The mouse might also die somewhere inconvenient and cause a stink. I've heard that in NY the mouse typically goes to its more permanent home, which is usually the basement, to die, but I don't know if this is true. In terms of traps, glue traps seem to work the best, though it could be considered cruel if you don't humanely kill the animal after you trap it. Place them along walls as this is where mice normally run. Old school snap traps and some of the gentler alternatives probably work okay, but most of the people I know prefer glue.
If you're looking to fill holes, mice hate steel wool and won't usually chew through it.
Good luck!
Craig
