Skid Marque: How To Drive The Saab Way â European Car Magazine
By Amanda Savercool â May 2007
A puddle on a patch of slick asphalt is usually something youâd avoid, especially behind the wheel of a brand-new vehicle. Even the most adventurous among us is probably not going to the gun toward a red light at 60 mph to deliberately engage ABS and see how well the car maneuvers while changing lanes and threshold braking.
We all know how fun a little tire chirp can be, but not when fun smells like two weeksâ worth of salary burning off the wheels. Or when it sounds like a police siren demanding that you pull over to the shoulder.
Saab recognizes that most people donât ever fully realize the potential of their vehicles. With its Aero Academy, customers who purchase or lease a new Saab performance model are invited to attend a two-day driving course â at no extra charge. At the safe and penalty-free setting of Road Atlanta, owners can test their driving skills and learn new ones in the process.
A 9-3 Aero SportCombi owner may be a schoolteacher who bought the car for its functionality, as well as its performance. Another way may be a surfer or snowboarder who bought one for the exact same reason. Whatever the case, these Saab-lovers are able to come together and see what their vehicles can do.
Best of all, they get to beat up someone elseâs car and not their own. Instructors from the nearby Panoz Racing School lead their pupils through 20-percent class time, then turn them loose to select their model of choice and apply their newly acquired knowledge.
The course offers exercises in skidpad, threshold and trail braking, lane change, slalom, and finesse driving. On the skidpad, participants discover what itâs like to spin out in their car, and hopefully learn how to correct it. Instructors yell âfloor it!â at wide-eyed rookies, who then stomp at the throttle, see a red light, and attempt to brake when changing lanes.
The grand finale is at the autocross course, where drivers compete in teams to show off what theyâve learned about cornering, proper race lines and overall vehicle control. Lots of orange cones will be killed over the course of a day. But thatâs better than your neighborâs mailbox (or your neighbor).
