Unless your dog has teeth problems that hinders its ability to eat kibble, kibble is the way to go, unless you want to make your own (raw). The current rat poison debacle is in canned and pouches w/gravy. These may look more like the kind of food we eat, instead of dry kibble, but kibble is best for your dog.
I feed Sidney, my Aussie, Candidae, and he looks great.
I know that Science Diet gets a lot of vet recommendations, but I would stay away from anything with corn.
