The only way to know what you're looking for is to try them out. Any shop worth the tires you'll ride on will let you take a bike out for an extended ride. Wear appropriate clothes an shoes, and ride a bunch of bikes. You'll know which ones fit your needs, and the shop guys can answer any question you have. You can at least narrow your choices down that way.
I have (serious) mountain and road bikes, so I'm probably not one to give advice.
Good luck, and enjoy the ride!
