I'm not familiar with any issues with the autobox on the 900. The OG900 (93 and earlier) had a three speed which was a little buzzy at highway speed, but I don't think it was a reliability issue.
The ZF autobox in the 9000 wasn't a model of reliability - although many lasted longer, the 9000 autobox could only be counted on for about 120K miles. Of course, that's much longer than many cars, but not a lot for a Saab.
I've heard of no issues with the NG900, 9-3 or 9-5 autobox. Seeing as the 900 was built from 1979/80 until 1998(?), it would help if you were more specific in your concerns.
