Motorcycles in Calif traffic, close call.

Mike Lynch, et al CA bikers. Thought of you on a recent trip to So Cal. I was driving from Santa Barbara to San Diego. As an Ohioan, I'm not really used to your traffic habits.
I ran into a slowdown north of LAX on 405. I put on my turn signal, looked in the mirror and over my shoulder, and merged left deliberately. Out of nowhere a motorcyle blew by at around 80-90mph, which was 40-50mph faster than traffic.
I don't know how I missed him, or he missed me. He did some serious weaving, and I never saw him until he passed me. Would have been very bad if we had connected.
I've had surprises over the years as motorcycles pass between lanes of stalled traffic in CA. Usually it is just 10-20mph faster than the going rate of traffic. This time really caught me by surprise.
How often does this turn to tragedy on these roads?
