More to value than house prices

We found we came out ahead, not by a lot, but still positive on taxes, etc. No sales tax helps, and car insurance is a lot less.
Anyway, over the years we've come to realize the difference is more than the bucks. We live in a semi-rural town and it's been a nice place for the kids to grow up. Except for the commercial strip in town, we have one stoplight. It's quieter, safer (we don't lock our cars in the driveway), neighbors look out for one another. You can go for a walk in the country, right out your front door. Except on the main roads traffic is light and less frantic. I found my driving got a lot less aggressive when we moved here. This is stuff you get in any rural area, and it's certainly the same in MA once you get west a ways, and it's the other value that's not readily apparent when you look at living in some place less suburban and more rural. It's not for everyone, though. And that's good!
