with OCR. Or maybe at all.
OCR hasn't progressed much compared to the technologies around it. There are several very good medium to high speed scanners out there (expensive), usually connected to (very expensive) digital printing systems (Kodak, IBM, Xerox and Oce) and they are fine for scan-to-print applications. But OCR is much harder.
Where OCR works is for specific apps where OCR is part of the workflow and text characters are designed and spaced to make it easy for OCR software. Most fonts, especially serifed fonts, do not. I've used some OCR software that came with a scanner that was OK, but it still required running spell check and a lot of manual review. See what comes with a scanner and be prepared to spend time correcting stuff.
Good luck.
