As others have mentioned, you can replace the battery in an iPod. No, it isn't like changing the battery in a flashlight, but you don't do it that often.

I have a Palm Pilot (T3, and older one) and not only do I use it to keep my appointments and contacts, it has a mp3 player AND I can watch videos (MPEG4). Just put the music onto a SD card and stick it in. Yes, replacing the battery is a little bit of work, but I wouldn't throw it away if the battery died - I'd replace it. Most of the newer Palm pilot models have the same mp3 capability. And you can get all sorts of fun applications, from games to MS office (I have some Excel spreadsheets going).
