business infrastructure to work from than does China, and Hyundai was already a substantial manufacturing firm: heavy equipment and ships, for starters. Cars were an add-on to a company that made LOTS of other machines. They simply had to learn how to do cars. And they have.

I ran part of their customer satisfaction program in the late '80s when their cars defined the term "sh!tbox" and they learned from every mistake.

China is in turmoil and you're right, there are no controls. Good stuff is made there--when proper control from the US or other parent company is in place. But most Chinese companies on their own don't yet seem to have the market savvy to compete on the world stage without that kind of support. This will change, probably quickly, but for now I think buying a lot of Chinese products is a bit of a crapshoot.
