After 18 years, I removed the basketball goal I installed for my oldest son's 9th birthday. He also helped with the job. I followed the precise instructions when I installed it nearly two decades ago - including using 1,000 pounds of concrete.
You read it right; one-thousand pounds!
The base was a cylinder of concrete 18-inches in diameter and almost 4 feet deep. The pole was then filled with concrete to make it stronger and to dampen vibration from the ball striking the backboard.
For those facing a similar challenge, here is how we did it.
1) Using an abrasive blade in my circular saw, we scored the metal/concrete pole about 1/4-inch deep at half its height. Smacking it with a sledge then toppled the top section with a single blow.
2) Repeat step #1 at ground level to fully remove the upright.
3) Rent an electric demolition hammer (We used a 60# Bosch unit) to remove the top 8 to 12 inches of concrete pole base. This will require one hour of time.
4) Repeat step #1 again. This time at the top of demo'd footing, 8 to 12-inches below grade.
5) Fill hole with top soil, then seed or sod to match yard.
If you haven't guessed by now, I abandoned the bottom 36 inches of concrete pole base in the ground. My wife was worried that I would find using the jack hammer so much fun that I would remove the entire foundation! I may be crazy, but not that crazy.
