It really all depends on where you are and your cable company, and exactly how large of a TV you want. A flat panel LCD larger than 20" using your existing cable with no box is going to look like poo for lack of a better expression. It will be stretched out and grainy. Depending on where you are you may be able to pick up High Definition signals through an HD antenna; basically a glorified pair of bunny ears. Local stations are required to transmit digital HD signals along with their analog signals. HD signals are digital so it's either all or nothing. You will get a crystal clear picture or no picture at all. Some TV's come with a card slot, where you can put a card in the back of your TV and get the digital and high def channels. The only thing you miss are the on screen menus and guides. Again, it depends on the TV you get and your cable company. Otherwise you will need a set-top box to get a digital signal. Cable can get pretty expensive. We have Hi-Def and cable internet and our bill is well over $100 a month. Let me know if you have any other specific questions. I am happy to help. I did all the research when we got our new TV about a year and a half ago. We got a 55" Sony Wega LCD Rear Projection television. The picture is phenomenal - there is no going back.
