The mechanic could be right. The worst case scenario is that the car sucked water into the engine and experienced hydrolock. This means that the pistons tried to compress water instead of air, and since water can't compress something expensive did instead, such as the con rods or psitons. If the Audi has a lower air intake than most cars it could indeed be the case that it was affected and other cars weren't.
Did the engine crank when you tried to start it? If the engine was at low RPMs it's also possible that the engine hydrolocked but was not damaged and you'll just need to get the water out of it. Of course, the problem could be an electrical issue or something else entirely, but you might want to brace yourself for the cost of a new engine just in case.
