Generally speaking, this is a disaster waiting to hit your wallet.
Leaving the base exposed to the weather will likely cause it to become saturated with rain. The only cure in these cases is to leave it exposed longer and hope for drying sun and winds, or to remove the wet base and replace it with new dry material.
Removing poor base is called "Undercutting" and is expensive. Plan on $30 per cubic yard to remove and replace, and they will want to /need to remove 12-inches of base.
Now, it is possible your drive is so bad that it has already allowed massive amounts of water to soak into the base, and your paving contractor is taking the least costly route for you - allowing it to remain open and hopefully dry naturally to avoic the cost of undercutting.
If the base is already wet, it won't hurt things to try the natural drying method. If the base is dry, don't risk it becomming ruined by leaving it open for prolonged periods.
