Someone's car crashed into building. Recourse?

Last night, a car jumped the curb, drove on the sidewalk for about 40 feet (15 meters) and ran into the house. The driver ran away. The police came and towed the car away. The car has a license plate. It is not a cheapo car (Mitsubishi Diamonte, the larger car made or used to be made in Adelaide, South Australia).
Luckily, the house is not severly damaged as the car hit the foundation (concrete). The car's airbags deployed.
Can we get the car owner's insurance to pay the rest of the damage? How to find out the owner? Is the owner the driver? If so, will the driver come and kill us if we ask them or their insurance company to pay. Normal drivers don't kill but they also don't run away like that.
