Pretty good idea to test tires at different tread depths. I'll say that results vary with the tire, based on my limited experience. Everyone needs to be aware of the degradation, even though it seems obvious that wet performance would be degraded.
I had a '95 Integra GSR (yeah, I know it's not a Saab). Original tires were Michelin MXV4 195/55-VR15. When they got near the wear bars (2/32) they were pretty scary in the rain.
I replaced them with Dunlop SP Sport 9000 in the same size (but I think W rated). When I wore those down to the wear bars, they weren't degraded nearly as bad.
Naturally, YMMV...
