I must say that I have a passion for timber frame construction and will try to steer anyone towards building/living in one. There are a few good argumnents for the timber frame construction - use less wood, doesn't burn like a tinder box, should last forever - but these issues can be addressed with stick frame or other construction techniques. It really comes down to what you want to live in.

One way that I see cutting costs is to do a timber fram hybrid - use timber framing for one portion of the home (usually living/dining/kitchen graet room) and stick frame or SIPS for the rest of it.

I have worked with Randy at Joint Effort Timberframing and he is up in VT somewhere. Very nice guy who knows what he is doing (ex-structural engineering professor). His web site is down, but I attached a link to a local contractor search that has his number.

Also look at Timber Framers Guild (tfg.org) for some more info.

As for design, I would recommend hiring an architect or designer to work with you. For the typical home, you would be looking at $2500-$10000 (probably around $5000). I may be biased, but we can usually help the owner figure out what they really want, need, and can afford. We also help identify issues, systems, and items that may not be on the radar of the average owner/builder.

While you are at it, think of hydronic radiant floors, rumford fire places, and slate floors and counters. Good luck and enjoy the experience.
