I tend to agree with No Snaab, especially because in recent years (global warming?) there has been far less snow than I remember from growing up here.
A lot depends on where in Illinois you live (Chicago vs. northern boonies, vs. semi-tropical south) and what you need/use your car for. I live in the Chicago metropolitan area and commute about 40 miles per day, suburb to suburb. In the past several years, there have been about three days per year that I dreaded winter driving, but did OK with my 9000 equipped with "all-season" tires with decent tread depth. I have seen cars that have summer-only tires that are worse than useless in the snow - they are hazard to everyone else.
My commute is primarily on a designated state highway, so it is one of the first roads to see snowplows, but it is also heavily traveled, so the snow gets packed into ice. During severe weather, I have now decided that a two-hour, "white knuckle" 20 mile trip is better spent on public transportation, slow and unreliable as it is normally, and exacerbated during a snowstorm.
