I used Travelocity when I first began traveling a lot about 10 years ago. Then I switched to buying directly from the airlines and it was often no more expensive and offered more options. Since I use only a couple of carriers, it's much easier to deal direct and worth the extra it sometimes costs. Plus when you make a mistake like you did, the airline will correct it for you, sometimes for free, or if you're not lucky, for $100.
Plus, with lots of miles on one or two airlines you tend to get better service when things go wrong, get free upgrades and better seating choices, which make travel a lot nicer.
Travleocity is not a great deal, and as you discovered, you lose a lot of flexibility. I think it's OK for people who travel once or twice a year, but if you fly a lot it's not worth the aggravation.
