I helped a friend install a two part water treatment system in his house.
Part one was the standard carbon filter,
Part two was the magnetic softner. Salt based systems caused health problems with a family member.
While he swears by it today (as does his wife) installing it was easy which turned into a nightmare because of a defective tank.
If you did not know the magnetic softners consist of plastic bead with a slight charge.
They are also supposed to stay in the tank, and not travel into the plumbing of a house.
My friend had a defective tank and we sent thousands of plastic beads thru his entire house. Which blocked every water valve in the house.
If you go with a magnetic system make sure you install a basic $40 "whole house filter" AFTER your magnetic filtration system (most instructions say install it before not after) to prevent this "fluke" from hitting your house.
Had we thought things thru, it would have made sense to do that, however we did not and as a result my friend/family was without water for 2 days as we/plumbers flushed the lines.
2 years later they are still having problems on occasion.
While we flushed the majority of the beads, it is doubtful we will get them all.
All because we did not install a "$40 fail safe" (neither do any manufacturers)to prevent that from happening in the first place. (While one company is now looking at it anyway).
