you most likely need to add a new connection, and tell it to use the wireless card. If the drivers were removed then do this while attached to the wired network. if your wife's computer is same OS then you can use hers as a template of the settings. Consider going to the manufacturers site for additional drivers (Dell for example has the drivers needed by 1) model, or 2) the configuration number on the bottom of the laptop).
And of course, there is always take the laptop back to work, to the IT department, and tell them to FIX IT LIKE IT WAS BEFORE YOU WORKED ON IT!
