Any video experts here?

For some corporate video work I need to upgrade from a fairly basic camcorder (Canon Z800) to something with more capability, but don't need a pro-level cam. We do need the ability to use external mikes, which cuts all the consumer-grade cams out. We need more manual control, too.
Research has led me to the Canon GL2, which has been on the market for several years and seems pretty solid; and the Sony HVR-A1U which has the added advantage of being able to shoot in HD. These can be had for $1100 to $2000 online, which is where our budget is.
High Def (from the Sony) is nice but not necessary for what my team and I will be doing, much of which winds up on the Web. Plus HD adds some editing time and complexity.
Both are MiniDV format which is fine because we have a workflow that works for that and since we archive tapes, we never lose the original. And from what I've learned Macs and Final Cut Pro are happier with tape than video from SD cards or discs.
Does anyone out there have experience with either of these cameras? I have some field tests from my research and been to Apple to see about other issues, but need more input before we pull the trigger.
Thanks, all.
